Convicted child killer Lucy Letby was handed a rare “whole life order” at Manchester Crown Court on Monday, meaning the 33-year-old will spend the rest of her life behind bars.
On Friday, the former neonatal nurse was convicted of the murders of seven babies and the attempted murder of six more. She is only the fourth woman ever to be handed the toughest punishment the British justice system has at its disposal, a group that also includes the Moors murderer Myra Hindley.
Announcing the sentence, Mr Justice Goss noted that Letby had refused to attend the court to hear the sentence handed down, and directed that she be given a transcript of his remarks and copies of the families’ impact statements.
