The UN said 11 of its staff members have been killed by Israeli air strikes in Gaza since Saturday.
“The protection of civilians is paramount, including in times of conflict,” said Juliette Touma, communications director with the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA. “They should be protected in accordance with the laws of war.”
Touma told the AP that the strikes killed UN staff members at their homes.
The UN agency’s headquarters in the city has also been damaged, without causing any casualties, but 20 UN schools that also act as shelters have been damaged.
UNRWA, which began operations in 1950, employs 13,000 people, including doctors, drivers and sanitation workers.
