A Tory parliamentary candidate under investigation over a bet placed on the timing of the election is married to the Conservatives’ director of campaigning, according to party officials.
Laura Saunders, who is standing for election in Bristol North West and a Tory staffer in her own right, is facing a probe by the Gambling Commission over an election-related bet, people with knowledge of the situation told the Financial Times.
Separately two party insiders said that Saunders is the wife of Tony Lee, the party’s director of campaigning.
The Conservatives said: “We have been contacted by the Gambling Commission about a small number of individuals. As the Gambling Commission is an independent body, it wouldn’t be proper to comment further, until any process is concluded.”
Saunders, Lee and the Gambling Commission did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
