Vaughan Gething has said he is resigning as first minister of Wales, ending a four-month tenure that was dogged by a series of scandals.
He said: “I have this morning taken the difficult decision to begin the process of stepping down as leader of the Welsh Labour Party and, as a result, First Minister.
“Having been elected as leader of my party in March, I had hoped that over the summer a period of reflection, rebuilding and renewal could take place under my leadership. I recognise now that this is not possible. It has been the honour of my life to do this job even for a few short months.”
Earlier on Tuesday, three ministers in the assembly quit and called on him to resign, a further blow to Gething’s position weeks after he lost a vote of no confidence in the Senedd.
His brief tenure had been dogged by questions about controversial donations he received when running for the position, as well as a recent leak scandal.
This is a developing story . . .
