Boris Johnson will appear before the House of Commons Privileges Committee this afternoon to answer questions about his misleading statements to Parliament about parties at 10 Downing Street during the pandemic lockdowns.
Ahead of the former Prime Minister’s testimony, the Committee has released further evidence, including about how Johnson’s aides and officials handled scrutiny of the parties when the revelations first emerged.
This exchange involving then-Director of Communications, Jack Doyle, discussing questions from journalist Pippa Crerar caught our eye in particular:
“Just be robust and they’ll get bored.” Of course, we all know that nobody got bored and instead what followed was an enormously damaging scandal that helped to destroy Johnson’s government.
Doyle, once a Daily Mail hack, these days offers his expert press relations advice to City clients of consultancy Headland, where he’s a partner.
